AMD's RF chip is shortlisted for Meta's designated equipment list

  In order to further accelerate the "Evenstar" program, on May 11, Meta officially announced its cooperation with chip giant AMD, making AMD one of the suppliers of RF equipment designated in the Evenstar program.


  It is reported that the designated RF equipment will use AMD's (Xilinx) RF chip Xilinx Zynq UltraScale+ RF SoC. The Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC is a heterogeneous computing architecture that includes a complete Arm processing subsystem, FPGA fabric, and full analog-to-digital programmability in the RF signal chain, which not only provides a complete monolithic software definition for different applications radio platform, but also helps to produce radio variants as market dynamics evolve.


  In March, Dan Rabinovitsj, Meta's vice president of connectivity, said current home and cellular networks are not ready for the Metaverse. In addition, Meta has also stated several times that today's telecommunications network will not achieve its grand blueprint for the metaverse if it does not improve drastically.


  The Evenstar program was launched by Facebook in early 2020, before the company changed its name to Meta. The program is a collaboration between Facebook Connectivity and global industry partners to accelerate the adoption of Open RAN technology and was created to accelerate the availability and commercialization of Open RAN solutions. Evenstar enables mobile network operators to match different hardware and software to build base stations, rather than buying all the equipment from a single equipment vendor. The move could reduce the cost of base stations and make broadband more widely available around the world.
